SkinneePix: Selfie app promotes slimming delusion

Even supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio is in selfie fever. The App Skinneepix wants us all to look like Victoria's Secret Angel. Do we want that?

Absolutely unnecessary!

The megatrend #selfie has been part of discussions since the beginning. Since we've fallen for Instagram & Co., it's been consensus to present yourself to the Web through a juxtaposition of self-portrait and self-portrait. Narcissistic? Maybe. But there is also a positive side to the selfie phenomenon: studies show that more and more people use selfies to get in touch with others and that the traditional beauty stereotype is reconsidered.

But the selfie-obsession also brings with it negative: with the self-portrayal on the Net, the number of cosmetic surgeries among under-30s is growing. But that's not it: there's a new selfie app called SkinneePix that makes you look thinner on selfies up to 15 pounds (about 7 kilograms). I beg your pardon?

The App SkinneePix, for 99 cents in the App Store, uses an algorithm to distort the photos and make the photographed person look five, ten or 15 pounds lighter. As SkinnerePix says, "SkinneePix makes your pictures look good, so it makes you feel good, it's easy, and nobody has to know, it's your little secret."

So SkinneePix is just another photo filter tool, but the message behind the app is more than worrying to us! The app increases the pressure, especially on young girls who belong to the strongest self-maker group. We find: An app that nobody needs!
