Varicose veins should be removed . And not just for beauty reasons. Because they can also lead to pain and thrombosis . It's best to start removing your varicose veins in the spring. Because now often necessary aftercare with compression stockings is easier than in summer.
Four ways to remove varicose veins
Pull out the wires
The so-called stripping is the standard procedure and is paid by the health insurance . The varicose vein is threaded onto a fine wire and pulled out under anesthesia through a small incision on the lower leg or in the groin . In the past, complications often occurred. Today, however, bruising and pain are much less common.
Glue veins together
At the Verödung the vein is glued. The blood then seeks a new path through healthy veins and the varicose vein is gradually broken down by the body. The doctor injects a special agent into the vein. In the modern form of this "glue" is previously foamed. The foam adheres better to the vessel walls and you need less of the agent. "This means that there are hardly any side effects and the treatment leads to the goal faster, " explains Professor Dr. med. Dr. Stefan Hillejan from Hannover. The cost is 100 to 250 euros per session. Usually two to five treatments are needed.
Closing with light
He also uses modern laser equipment in his practice. The concentrated light rays can treat varicose veins without injuring other tissue. A laser probe is inserted into the vein. "Carefully, I push it under ultrasound control to the upper vein section, from where I pull the laser back evenly while it emits light pulses, " explains Prof. Hillejan. The resulting heat closes the vein. For the procedure only a tiny puncture is necessary. There are no visible scars. The costs for the laser treatment are between 1500 and 2500 euros.
Radio wave energy
Similar to the laser method, the VNUS Closure procedure uses a small needle-stick to insert a wafer-thin catheter into the vein, which transmits radio waves to the vessel walls. These heat up briefly to about 110 degrees. The varicose vein is thereby closed without scarring. "Our patients can go home two hours after the procedure and are ready to use again after a short period of time, " says Prof. Hillejan. Even with this treatment, the costs incurred by about 2500 euros have to be paid by the patients themselves.

Due to pressure from outside, special compression stockings help to stabilize the vessel walls . Once these "support stockings" were a fashionable imposition. Today, they are available in all imaginable colors. Made of special microfiber material, they even cool in summer.
Shower cold legs in the morning
Start the day on your feet with cold water . They not only refresh, they also narrow the vessels and thus ensure a smooth blood flow. Always move the jet of water from your feet upwards. Start at the outside of the legs.
Raise feet as often as possible
Heavy, tired and aching legs are among the first signs of venous disease. Especially in the evening, the affected women's feet and legs are swollen. The symptoms improve but usually quickly when the feet are raised. Cooling provides additional relief .
In high-heeled shoes, the calf muscles can not move properly and do not support the veins. The vessels emit, varicose veins arise. Often wear flat shoes.
