E-numbers: worth knowing about hidden additives

We now understand that most of our food contains additives. But did you look closely at the back of the packaging when shopping for groceries? There, in addition to the calories, ingredients and acidulants so-called E numbers are listed. Behind it are deliberately added ingredients, such as thickeners, flavor enhancers or dyes. These ingredients are added to foods to make them longer lasting or visually more beautiful.

Now do not think that you are eating unhealthily and artificially. Even with E numbers, you should differentiate. Some of them should definitely be avoided. Other E numbers surprise with a healthy side effect.

You should avoid these E numbers

E 102 (tartrazine, synth. Azo dye)

E 102 is contained in confectionery, flavored drinks and custard powder.

E 110 (yellow orange S, synth. Azo dye)

This E-number is used on apricot jam, chewing gum and ready-made soups.

E 122 (azorubin, synth. Azo dye)

E 122 is included in ice cream, brown colored sauces and fruit preserves.

E 124 (Cochenillerot A, synthetic azo dye)

Dressings, sweets and jelly foods contain this number.

E 129 (allura red, synth. Azo dye)

E 129 is found in minced meat products and beverages.

E 210 (benzoic acid, preservative)

Whether fruit yoghurt, sauces or fish products - the preservative is found everywhere in these foods.

E 280 (propionic acid, preservative)

Packaged baked goods contain this artificial additive.

All enumerated E-numbers can cause allergies or allergic reactions and induce hyperactivity in children, as well as falsify the taste. E 280 can be genetically engineered and E 210 is even banned in cat and dog food!

E 101 (riboflavin, vitamin B2)

The riboflavin is used for the yellowing of fatty foods, such as mayonnaise. It is an important vitamin for the human organism, eg for a healthy skin.

E 140 (chlorophyll, green plant pigment)

Green vegetables and fruits preserved in a liquid, sodas and sweets contain chlorophyll. The green plant pigment contains the mineral magnesium, which is needed in the human body for various muscle functions.

E 160 A (carotene, per vitamin A)

For coloring soups, desserts and mayonnaise, this important vitamin is used. It has a big impact on our eyesight and eye protection.

E 160 D (lycopane, natural color of tomato peel)

This important plant compound can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. He finds himself in ketchup, soups and sauces.

E 162 (prayer red / betanin, won from beetroot / edge)

Vinegar, fruit jelly, chewing gum or oxtail soup - Betanin also has a risk-minimizing effect on certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases.

E 300 (L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C)

Juices and sodas contain the important vitamin to strengthen our immune system.

E 307 (alpha tocopherol, vitamin E)

The vitamin protects against arteriosclerosis and is mainly used in sausages.
