Coffee: How healthy is the brown gold?

Coffee is a popular drink. Thus, one in five holds by a constant intake of caffeine throughout the day fit and powerful, as now a survey of pharmacies Umschau revealed. But how healthy or unhealthy is the brew, which is also called brown gold?

Coffee is a popular everyday drug

The caffeinated hot drink is considered one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages in Germany. Every day, every German drinks an average of half a liter of coffee a day. Above all, however, above-average numbers of men between the ages of 30 and 59 consume the hot beverage.

Coffee had a bad reputation for a long time

It is still anchored in the general consciousness that coffee is an unhealthy vice. Allegedly, the drink has a negative effect on both the heart and the blood pressure. Although coffee consumption actually increases in the short term, regular drinking of coffee in healthy people does not increase the risk of hypertension.

Coffee was also suspected for a long time to promote the development of cancer, since when roasting carcinogenic substances should arise. While this is true, experts point out that the concentration of these substances remains within acceptable levels, even at high levels of consumption.

Healthy effects of the mousse maker

Contrary to widespread prejudice, studies show that moderate coffee consumption of about four cups a day can reduce the risk of heart failure by a whopping eleven percent. Coffee also has a healthy effect on type 2 diabetes: In subjects who drank more than four cups a day, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes sank by as much as 23 percent. This is partly due to the ingredient chlorogenic acid, which is found in large quantities in coffee. Chlorogenic acid should have a positive effect on the insulin and sugar metabolism, but has another advantage: It belongs to the polyphenols. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that render harmless to free radicals in the body.

Conclusion: coffee is not unhealthy! An average coffee consumption of half a liter per day has no negative effects.
