The topic is not new, but always causes excitement: car driving ban on German roads. This time in the form of "car keys".

This Lent has it all, because instead of in April in the classic Lent to abstain from alcohol or candy, the Greens call for a voluntary "car driving" from Ash Wednesday to Easter. 40 days no car: Above all, the policy sees advantages in it. Katrin Dziekan from the Federal Environment Agency and the transport expert of the Greens in the Bundestag, Stephan Kühn, also demand that the public transport companies should also offer discounts during this time in order to make "car driving" even more attractive.

There will be no general driving ban

Anyone who thinks of a general driving ban right now can be reassured. It is not the aim of the action to ban driving, according to Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks (SPD). Rather, it should be about raising awareness that it is also possible to travel by other modes of transport in many regions.

Three out of four households own a car in Germany. That's about 45 million vehicles nationwide. Too much for the environment and the roads. Especially the environment suffers. In city centers, ozone and particulate matter levels are significantly exceeded. And not only in the summer months.

Even the ADAC has no objection to the action. This is about voluntary renunciation. A survey by the ADAC even shows that many motorists would like to change to bus and train. So far, however, the prices and routes are a hindrance.

If motorists and public transport companies went hand in hand through Lent, the project could be successful.
