In the parochial Paraguay, an abortion is only legal if the life of the expectant mother is threatened. Even with a rape, no exception is made. So also in the case of eleven year olds. She was given her rapist's child on Thursday in a clinic. The child was brought by Caesarean section because the girl was not yet physically developed enough to give birth to the child in a natural way.
Amnesty International has repeatedly emphasized that the prohibition of abortion violated the human rights of the girl. The girl was still a child, the pregnancy had been extremely dangerous.
The baby's father was arrested in May. The 42-year-old waits for his verdict. He is said to have abused the little girl for some time. The mother reported the abuse to the police before the pregnancy, but continued to live with the man. She too was arrested.
In many countries in South America, strict abortion laws prevail. Peru is now in favor of a relaxation. There is also a rethink in Chile. Women are publicly in favor of being able to decide for themselves whether they want to abort or not.
