#BringBackOurGirls

The hashtag is spreading rapidly. #BringBackOurGirls is a social media movement focused on kidnapping nearly 300 schoolgirls in Nigeria.

Even celebrities show their solidarity.

Michelle Obama is deeply shocked. On May 10, 2014, she held the weekly radio address instead of her husband for the first time, and that was a sad occasion. The First Lady spoke about the kidnapping of nearly 300 Nigerian students by the terrorist group Boko Haram. The fate of the girls abducted on April 14 remains uncertain. As terrorist leader Abubakar Shekau announced in a video, they should be sold or forced to marry. Although there are indications of their whereabouts (as of May 12), the Nigerian government seems overwhelmed with the situation.

Stars gather at #BringBackOurGirls

The president's wife is not the only one who finds it hard to stand aside in the face of the desperate situation. She sees her own daughters in the abducted girls, according to Michelle Obama. Like other celebrities, such as Cara Delevingne or Alicia Keys, she showed her sympathy with the girls' family and friends through the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, which is currently going through the web millions of times.

#BringBackOurGirls: What is the real effect?

From an expert's perspective, the involvement via hashtag is controversial, is considered so-called lazy activism, because it calms only the own bad conscience, without actually being acted. Even though the real impact may be small, social media solidarity is still better than total ignorance. Unfortunately, with movements of this kind, it is not enough for stars to use them as a platform for their own self-expression and let their narcissism run wild. So, the Russian underwear model, Cristiano Ronaldo's girlfriend Irina Shayk, presented with her bare chest and lasciviously throbbing lips to promote the hashtag (or rather her own beauty?).
