The closer the Christmas holidays are, the more we all deal with one question: Will there be snow in 2016? Of course, no promises can be made at this time, after all, the weather is downright unpredictable anyway until the last minute, but the statistics of recent years make at least a forecast possible.

Compared to the Süddeutsche Zeitung Andreas Friedrich, spokesman for the German Weather Service said that there is at least on the Zugspitze a "hundred percent hit rate for snow" . Ever since the year in which the weather records began, snow has always been on the highest mountain in Germany during the Christmas holidays.

Residents and visitors to the North Sea island of Heligoland, on the other hand, can assume that they will not have a white Christmas in 2016. According to the German Weather Service, white flakes can only be expected every 50 years on the island.

But what about other parts of Germany? Is there a chance of a white Christmas?

Here it could snow at Christmas

In Munich at least there is a statistical probability of 50 percent. In the area around the capital Berlin, the likelihood of snowing around Christmas is 20 percent. If you live in the Rhineland, in the Ruhr area, in the southwest of Germany or in Schleswig-Holstein, you have to be content with a probability of 10 percent. So if you want to increase your chances of getting a white Christmas, it's best to quickly organize a visit to your relatives in the South.

The whole of Germany was incidentally 2010 at Christmas under a nice white blanket of snow.

Even if the statistics speak against it, we still hope for a white Christmas for all. We may well dream a little bit more.

And if it does not snow in spite of everything, then we just make sweet snowmen.
