Can we look forward to a white Christmas in 2014?

Is there a white Christmas in 2014? The weather farmer sees in nature all signs of a cold winter. The meteorologists stop it.

White Christmas? That says the weatherman

A farmer's wisdom says: "If the foliage does not like to fall off the trees, a cold winter will sound." After that we should have frosty months ahead. "The signs in nature also indicate a severe winter, " explains Wetterbauer Hans Boes (72). The weatherman reads his predictions from nature.

He sees, feels and smells the weather. The weatherman can even hear it when he interprets the sounds of the stream flowing past the Gimmiger Hof in Rhineland-Palatinate, his place of residence.

And he is watching for his predictions exactly how his animals are doing. "My cows and horses are already wearing a dense winter dress." And he looks at the plant world. "The trees in the woods are full of nuts, " he says of his rambles in nature.

In connection with the old farmer rules he came so far on a super hit rate.

For Christmas, he looks this year, despite the prospect of a cold winter, rather green. "There will be no snow cover for the festival, " he believes.

As a harbinger of his prognosis serves him the smoke of the Martinsfeuer on 10 November. "The strong wind from the east this evening does not predict winter prospects for Christmas, but it will be cool, but it will remain dry for the most part, with occasional showers of snow and, in higher altitudes, light snowy grizzlies, " Hans Boes notes.

But there is still a little hope for snowy days and winter landscapes, even at Christmas. "Decisive is St. Nicholas Day, " says the weatherman. Because, of course, he also knows a beautiful farmer rule: "If Santa Claus has a white beard, the Christ child gets wet feet - and vice versa."

But he also knows, "The climate is changing, the signs of nature and the wisdom of the ancients can deceive."

White Christmas? That's what the meteorologists say

That's why experienced weather farmers are like many scientists. All their satellite observations, weather stations and computers do not protect against misjudgements.

Nevertheless, US weather forecasters predict a warmer winter on the basis of long-term computer calculations.

Graduate geographer Matthias Habel (34) from the internet service wetteronline.de is nevertheless skeptical. "Meteorological calculations have no bearing on the specific weather on certain days like Christmas, " he explains. "They only provide clues as to whether the monthly mean temperature will be above or below the long-term average."

It should be warmer than normal in December. The chances of a white Christmas are therefore relatively low.
