How do you use the ring and how does it work?

Similar to the pill, the vaginal ring works with its combination of progestin and estrogen. These hormones alter the mucus in the cervix and thus prevent the penetration of sperm. The ring is set by the woman herself between the first and the fifth day of the menstrual period.

To be on the safe side, the first few days after that, you should additionally use a condom. The ring remains in the vagina for about three weeks, followed by a "ring-free" week, in which the menstrual period sets in - but the contraceptive protection is still guaranteed! Then the procedure begins again from the beginning, this time you put the ring on the first day of bleeding.

Advantages and disadvantages

You can use the ring yourself - like a tampon it should be pushed up as far as possible. No matter how he lies - the main thing is, he does not pinch or feel uncomfortable. If the ring slips during sex, it can easily be used again within three hours. Rinse briefly with lukewarm water.

Easy handling, high security and no panic, if something has slipped. In addition, it does not matter - in contrast to the pill - if you have diarrhea or an upset stomach. Nevertheless, the vaginal ring also has a downside: headache, vaginal inflammation and vaginal discharge, and an increased risk of venous thrombosis.
