People who talk to themselves quickly leave others with the impression that they have loosened a screw. But the opposite is the case.

The American psychologist Dolores Albarracin considers soliloquy one of the most important tools for controlling one's own behavior. So their subjects had to solve various tricky tasks. One group was specifically invited to have a soliloquy; the other was strictly forbidden. The result: those who commented on their actions solved the tasks much more successfully than the group, which was prevented from soliloquy.

"It has been proven that feelings and thoughts find an outlet for soliloquy, " says Albarracin. And that releases action energies. Whether it is fear or excitement, joy or grief, frustration or anger - talking to yourself reduces stress, reduces aggression and helps to solve problems.

Dirk Wedekind from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Göttingen also sees it as a method of thinking aloud. "When we're in a decision dilemma, dialogue with ourselves often leads us to get good results, it promotes concentration and boosts performance."

Especially in the workplace, self-talk is an effective way against time pressure and feeling overwhelmed, says Professor Hans-Dieter Hermann from the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG).

Psychologists therefore recommend that they regularly have a "soliloquy with the soul". Especially people who have problems with controlling their impulses or clearly structuring their thoughts should use this form of thinking.
