In addition to historic buildings is new architecture, near a Catholic church is the "Free State" Christiania - Copenhagen is full of contrasts and worth every time a journey.

Getting to Copenhagen

The easiest way to get to Copenhagen is by train. From Hamburg, an ICE goes directly to the Danish capital in about 4.5 hours. With the Deutsche Bahn, you can travel relatively cheaply with a special European ticket for 39 euros per tour. By the way, there are only a few train rides that are as exciting as these: The complete ICE is loaded onto the ship on Fehmarn and sailed across the Baltic Sea to the Danish mainland. On the ferry you can eat something for a short time (not to be recommended) or just let the beautiful sea breeze blow around your nose. Then take the train to Copenhagen Central Station.

Accommodation Copenhagen

Who thinks Copenhagen would be cheap, is wrong! Everything is expensive here! So if you do not want to spend all your money on accommodation, there is a good and cheap solution for you! The Omena Hotel Copenhagen is located just a block from the main train station - so super central - and is small but nice. It is a self-service hotel. That means there is no reception. When you book you get an opening code, which you enter at the hotel entrance door. The same code also opens the actual room door. The rooms are of course limited, but everything is there: table with chairs, bed, TV, bathroom - since the hotel opened only last year, the decor is also in a modern, orderly condition. If you love red, you will like it here!

Eating in Copenhagen

Life in Copenhagen is also not very cheap, but extremely tasty. For breakfast we go to Café Europa (here even the Copenhagen brunch goes). But if you expect a sumptuous buffet, this is wrong. The breakfast is ordered by the plate. You can choose between "Paris", "Copenhagen", "London" or "Berlin". Depending on your choice, yogurt with fruits or alternatively with nuts and honey, cheese, sausage, salmon, fresh fruits such as pineapple, grapefruit and melon, an egg and small bread rolls that you can reorder at any time. Everything was delicious, but a bit less for strong guys. Nevertheless: I liked it very much. The atmosphere is like in a Parisian cafe, buzzing, clattering dishes and reading a newspaper - just alive.

My absolute insider tip is the Italian restaurant "Ristorante Italiano" - sounds boring, but is awesome. You come in and feel right like in Italy. The fragrance, the decoration, the music - everything is wonderful there and you never want to go again. The food is delicious and really fair by Copenhagen standards. There is live music on the weekend - so great that you want to dance. The pizza is wonderfully crunchy and thin rolled out of the stone oven, the calf in cognac sauce tender and a single poem.

The culinary anti-tip: what you can really save is the restaurant Grøften on the grounds of the Tivoli. It is expensive and more reminiscent of mass processing. The red cabbage was bland and the duck was not really crispy. The only highlight: the fries - they were really good. Instead of sweet dessert, there was a cheese plate for me that did not honor their name: plate sounds like a great selection - what I got were five small pieces of Langweiler cheese with counted olives and three Kräckerstangen - and that for the equivalent of almost 16 €! So go away!

Shopping in Copenhagen

Anyone coming to Copenhagen should make a detour to Abercrombie & Fitch. Yes, of course, is very mainstream - but before you annoy all friends, bring a clothes from the US, you can just go shopping for it yourself ...

If you love porcelain, you can visit Royal Copenhagen - there you can admire sweet plates, cups and Co. from the traditional manufactory. Everything is not cheap, but a little reminder or a present for mom is already inside.

Things to do in Copenhagen

Of course, sightseeing is high on the agenda in Copenhagen. It is sometimes difficult to filter the huge range of activities and to accommodate within 2.5 days. Therefore, we have limited ourselves to a few.

Sure, who's in Copenhagen for the first time wants to see the famous little mermaid! We were lucky, she was there and her head and arms were there too. But surprise: she is so much smaller than ever thought.

If you like it very cheesy, you should go to Tivoli. Granted, for someone from Hamburg, who knows the cathedral since childhood, this amusement park is rather nice as a highlight - but many Copenhageners also believe that it is THE attraction in the city. Colorful lights, many different rides, small stalls and restaurants - theme areas like Asia invite you to a relaxing stroll in the park. Conclusion: Once there, you do not have to see it again. Stupid: The entrance fee is unfortunately not included. If you want to use roller coaster and Co., you have to pay.

Vesterbrogade 3, Copenhagen

Like in another world you feel in Christiania. The "Free State" is the Mecca for individualists, artists, free spirits and others. Photography is strictly forbidden - signs everywhere point this out. The buildings consist of construction trailers, self-built houses and old masonry that has been restored. Many residents have their workshops here and sell their handicrafts. Burning garbage cans warm visitors and residents on cold days. The air is grassy and yet there are nice little restaurants to stop in - and suddenly become aware - you are in Copenhagen!

Something for real guys is the Carlsberg Brewery! Ok, we girls too had our fun. Through the historic gate with the towering elephants through and into the museum. Here's an explanation of how the brewery, founded in 1847, has become one of the greats in the world. The incredible collection of beer bottles (over 16, 000 different bottles from all over the world) is the highlight of the exhibition in addition to the Haflinger horses in the barn. Finally, each visitor can sip through three different Carlsberg beers.
