France introduces a disposable ban

France is against the law of food waste: Large supermarket chains must not throw away fresh food.

A withered lettuce, a brown banana and a squeezed tomato - in supermarkets, tons of food ends up in the garbage every day. According to a study for the Ministry of Food, about 11 million tons of food are thrown away every year in Germany. But in other countries Europs does not look better. In France for example. Here, Parliament is now legislating against food waste.

Donations for aid organizations

France is responding with sharp measures to the waste of food: wholesalers are no longer allowed to throw away edible food in the future, but must donate it to charitable organizations or farms as pet food. So far this has not been the case. Unprepared foods were simply made unsuitable in most cases.

The French parliament goes one step further: Supermarkets covering more than 400 square meters must now sign a contract with a charity for food donations. In schools, the topic of food waste should be taught explicitly.

How is trade reacting to the new law?

The response of the wholesale: controversial. They are responsible for only 5 percent of wasted food - so the wholesale. Every Frenchman spends an average of 20 to 30 kilograms of food per year. By comparison, in Germany it is 81.6 kilograms per German citizen per year.

Whether this law will be introduced to us? Rather unlikely. A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture told the information service Agrar-Europe that some supermarket chains in Germany already donate unsold food to charitable aid organizations such as the Tafel - so fleischwirtschaft.de.
