Michelle and Barack Obama

They look so incredibly happy. How lovingly Michelle (45) and Barack Obama (48) deal with each other at public appearances - it's a real pleasure. Who would have thought that this couple had a hard time? In an interview with the respected New York Times, the US President admits: Michelle and he were in marriage counseling.

"It was important to us, " he explains. "Because there were times when I was afraid Michelle might be unhappy."

The problems started in the mid-1990s, when Barack Obama ran for the Senate for the first time. Suddenly there was little privacy, but long separations. In addition, Obama's career did not start as hoped. In 1998, after the birth of her first daughter Malia Ann (11), lawyer Michelle actually wanted to stay home. But that did not allow the finances! She says, "It opened my eyes to how hard marriage can be."

Through the therapy, they overcame the crisis, the second daughter Natasha (8) crowned her happiness. Which does not mean that everything is easy today!

"Since we live in the White House, we have gone out once, " Barack Obama admitted wistfully on the eve of her 17th wedding anniversary on October 3. Michelle, however, also sees the positive side: "This is the first time in a long time that we are in the same house seven days a week."

The Friday night belongs only to them alone. It is important to the First Lady to make it clear to young people in particular: "There is no ideal state. Our highs and lows should show everyone that a marriage requires work. "If you look at them today, you know that this work is worthwhile.
