What you need for the picnic basket:

  • braided basket bag with two handles oilcloth with stripe pattern (here: "Nicey Jane" by Susekurt on www.dawanda.de) wide cotton ribbon in matching color (haberdashery, here in cream)
  • tape measure
  • a thin felt-tip pen
  • fabric scissors
  • pins
  • sewing machine
  • matching sewing thread

And that's how easy it is:

  1. Cut a piece of oilcloth in the size of the bottom of the bag plus 1 cm seam allowance.
  2. For the sidewalls, cut a second piece of oilcloth of the following size: two times the height of the bag (plus 1 cm seam allowance) x the circumference of the bag (plus 2 cm seam allowance).
  3. Sew the oilcloth for the side walls to a hose. To do this, sew together the pages that correspond to the double pocket height, right to right.
  4. If the bag is conically shaped (wider at the top than at the bottom), some darts must be sewn to the bottom of the tube so that the lining fits well in the bag later. In the lower part of the tube on the left side of the fabric, stick out several wedge-shaped folds with pins, so that the tube fits exactly in the pocket (insert it into the pocket in between for the sample). Then sew the folds with the sewing machine. Tip: Always insert the pins in the seam allowance, as holes may remain in the oilcloth.
  5. Pin the bottom of the basket to the lower hose opening with pins right to right and sew all the way around.
  6. Put the resulting cloth bag in the bag. Mark four openings for the handles on the fabric part protruding upwards.
  7. Remove the fabric from the bag and cut the markings for the handle opening with scissors. Tip: cut out at the bottom of the openings rather generous than too short.
  8. Cut four pieces of cotton tape about half the length of the bag.
  9. Fold the top edge of the fabric bag out twice, with one tape per piece of fabric, and stitch.
  10. Put the finished fabric bag back in your pocket. Fold the tabs to the outside of the basket and tie the bands below the handles with loops.
