According to the "Guinness Book of Records", the world's best snoring is 93 decibels. This level of noise would be produced by a truck that thunders directly through your bedroom. But it does not have to be the full drone. Even less volume is enough to torment the partner night after night. According to the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine, about half of all German men and one quarter of women are between 40 and 60 years old. The common belief that most snorers are lying on their backs is a mistake. 96 percent of them even rattle in other body positions. The exact cause is unknown

Why are we snoring at all?

"We do not know yet, " admits Dr. Ingo Fietze, Head of the Sleep Medicine Center at the Berlin Charité. "We only know different triggers." Thus, the decreasing elasticity of the soft palate, which flutters in the wake of the breathing air, can produce the hated noise. "It's also possible for the back of the tongue to fall back into the throat and vibrate there." What really helps? Our expert Dr. Fietze has tested four current methods in the sleep laboratory.

Snoring glasses sets alarm

An electric pulse causes the glasses to blink when snoring. This leads to a change of position or a short awakening. Then the concert usually continues. The same effect, but cheaper: shake the Scharcher awake or hold his nose. Not recommended in the long run.

Strips widen the nose

They are glued to the nostrils. The strips do not hurt, you can try them. They generally improve nasal breathing and are therefore also used by athletes during training. But snoring does not necessarily have to improve. Problem: The strips do not last on each nose overnight.

Nose clips sit inside

They have the same effect as nose strips, with one difference: they are introduced into the nostrils. Thus, the pressure is exerted from the inside and thus on the nasal mucosa. This can irritate the nose and affect its circulation. Long-term effects have not been investigated so far.

Feed rail for the jaw

She shifts the lower jaw a few millimeters forward. This measure may be useful if the affected person's lower jaw is small and offset to the rear (so-called retrognathia). But only individually made rails are recommended. No cheap offer from the internet!
