A strong woman with a big heart

On August 27, Heidi Kabel would have been 100 years old. On this occasion, we look once again at the life of the special actress.

The house of Heidi Kabel's parents, in which she was born on August 27, 1914, stood exactly opposite the Low German Stage (the present-day Ohnsorg Theater) in Hamburg's Große Bleichen. Here, just a few years later, Heidi Kabel's great career was about to begin.

But Heidi cable should not become an actress first

Even Heidi cable father, the printer owner Ernst cable, had a close relationship to the Low German, he was temporarily chairman of the club born Hamburger. But an acting career was initially not intended for Heidi.

Heidi Kabel actually wanted to become a concert pianist. But one day, the then 18-year-old accompanied a friend to audition on just those Low German stage. In the end, not the girlfriend was taken, but Heidi! The terrified call of the mother "Heidi, you do not!" did not help. The daughter wanted to go on stage with all her might. In 1932 Heidi Kabel had her first engagement in the play Ralves Carstens . After that, she began a three-year theater education.

66 years of theater, 160 different pieces

Incredible 66 years played Heidi cable theater! She performed in 160 different pieces of the Ohnsorg Theater. In 1937 she married her acting colleague Hans Mahler (+70). The couple had three children. Daughter Heidi Mahler (70) later appeared often together with the mother.

The annoying Long-Liver, the domestic kite, the shrewd mother, the quirky old woman - all these roles fell into the repertoire of Heidi Kabel. Her showpieces were Gossip in the Stairwell, The Folder, Mother Mews, Sweet Home and many more. Especially on the side of Henry Vahl (+ 79) Heidi Kabel was for decades a guarantor for a full house.

But far beyond the borders of Hamburg, it was only known when the plays of the Ohnsorg Theater were broadcast nationwide from 1954 on television. Now the Low German and Heidi cables could be heard throughout Germany.

Heidi Kabel was not limited to the Ohnsorg Theater. She had many other television appearances. So she played 1985 in the twelve-part family series Erbin his - but very much. Together with the Bavarian folk actress Erni Singerl (+ 83) she appeared in the stories about Heidi and Erni and with Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff (+ 77) in the series Die Große Freiheit.

If Heidi Kabel often played biting and hardy types on stage, she had a big heart in her private life. Her social engagement was legendary. She supported homeless projects, a children's home, a Hamburg baby hatch and a hospice.

In 1998, Heidi Kabel officially took leave of the stage. She had noticed that her memory was subsiding and did not want to wait so long until she could not remember the lyrics on stage. In 2003 she moved to a Hamburg retirement home. Her family announced that Heidi Kabel suffered from senile dementia. Despite her progressive illness, she was once again on television. In 2007 she appeared in a small role in Detlev Buck's hands away from Mississippi, again at her daughter's side. On June 5, 2010, Heidi Kabel died at the age of 95 in her native city of Hamburg. She had been gently asleep, her family told her.
