More money, less fish: The weight of fish and shrimp is increasing more and more often with additional water. The consumer pays for tap water.

The Germans eat less and less fish. This is due to rising fish prices and catastrophic breeding conditions. Already in conversation: Pangasius . The freshwater fish is disreputable as a tasteless cheap fish. The latest discovery: Pangasius is pumped up with water.

Not an isolated case. Already at the beginning of the year, ZDF tested plaice and shrimp for their quality - with a surprising result. The weight of shrimp and fish is often increased by additional water.

Pangasius in the WDR check

In the test: 11 Pangasius fillets from the supermarket and the fish retailer. The result: terrifying. Six of the 11 products tested contained too much water. You have an additional water content of 20-40% detected. "A quality defect that arises in the production on site, " explains the WDR.

How does the extra water get into the fish?

Whether Pangasius , plaice or shrimp - the fish are rinsed with water before deep freezing. In the process, substances are added to them that are supposed to store their own fish water, but not foreign water. A permitted procedure that must be marked.

Each of the products tested did not mention the extra water. The State Food Inspectorate speaks of consumer deception. The fact is: the consumer pays for tap water. And without knowing it.

Fish: The ASC eco-label

Five of the tested Pangasius fillets were convincing. They contained neither additives nor artificially added water. Each was labeled with the ASC eco-label. A seal awarded by the environmental organization WWF.
