Half Hollywood is currently running around with the in-drink coconut water. Also with us it is on the shelves. But does that even superfood, what does it promise? We clarify!

A little bit of water that strengthens the body's defenses and boosts your metabolism is witchcraft? Not at all: Because the water of green coconuts is celebrated for its high nutritional content and the livelihood without any additives.

But did the coconut water trend just lead us by the nose? Does the stars' favorite drink ever live up to its promises? Or does the miracle drink lose its superfood status now? We took a closer look at the in-drink and clarified whether coconut water is worth the hype - and the multi-million dollar business behind it.

What is coconut water actually?

Many people think of coconut water as the white coconut milk from the ripe coconut. Coconut water, however, is the clear liquid that is found in unripe, green coconuts. It is usually offered in tetrapaks, in the health food store or in the supermarket (about 1.80 euros to 2.30 euros for about 300 ml). Coconut water is now also available in organic quality - then the price is slightly higher.

How does coconut water taste?

The pure and unadulterated coconut water has a low taste, reminiscent of the flesh of the coconut. Those who do not like this taste can switch to varieties with fruit additives - peach, pineapple, mango, now there is a wide range, but often with artificial vitamins.

Why is coconut water so trendy?

The stars drink it primarily because of the figure. Coconut water has - unlike water - a touch of taste with low calories (20 kcal / 100 ml) and hardly any fat (1 g / 100 ml). It also contains potassium. This mineral has a dehydrating effect, regulates muscle activity and digestion. In addition, further minerals stimulate the metabolism. And: The stars promise an anti-aging effect of the numerous vitamins.

Does coconut water keep what it promises?

Kilos lose with coconut water - that can work. But only if it replaces calorie-containing soft drinks. But that works just as well with water. Also in the mineral content coconut water is comparable to a good mineral water. Our verdict: one should rather drink water against thirst: that is cheaper - and almost as healthy. In general, if you eat a balanced diet, you do not need coconut water, but it does not hurt.
