Misdiagnosis with serious consequences

When she got nosebleeds, her doctor made a wrong diagnosis. Now the 25-year-old is missing a part of her face!

It started with nosebleeds. When this came again and again and sometimes lasted for hours, Jannine McHaffie went to see a doctor. But she could calm her down: it was just hay fever, she was assured. He did not have a solution to her problem.

But the nosebleed does not stop. Within the next five months, the 25-year-old mother repeatedly visits a hospital to stop her bleeding. But only in September 2014, the doctors question the original diagnosis. You find a strawberry-sized tumor in the nostril!

So it happens that the young mother is missing a part of her pretty face today. The reason: The clear misdiagnosis of her doctor.

But not only the first doctor had failed. Also, the second suspicion of a polyp turned out to be wrong - just as the tissue increasingly affects the woman's breathing, a thorough test is made. It was neither hay fever nor polyps that caused the nosebleed. Jannine McHaffie suffers from cancer. The supposedly harmless polyp turns out to be adenoid cystic carcinoma.

After the diagnosis comes a next shock: Jannine will miss parts of her face in the future. In a 13-stage operation, her palate, the upper teeth and some jaw and cheekbones must first be removed, to be later replaced from her calf bone.

Even at this difficult time, the young mother puts on a smile. She thinks of her 3-year-old daughter, who wants to see her grow up and takes everything into account. Her bravery pays off, the tumor can be successfully removed.

After the wrong diagnosis, the young mother now lacks part of her face. But a missing cheekbone is nothing in exchange for the life of her daughter, which she can now see growing up healthy.
