Four days of misery with itching - an editor is testing remedies for mosquito bites

Onion, acute ointment, cortisone, apple cider vinegar, cold wraps: In search of a home remedy for itching from a mosquito bite, I tested everything.

Itching from hell

"Mosquitoes and I really have a difficult relationship, I'm usually a big animal lover, but mosquitoes are all friends, mosquitoes are allowed to kill, why?" Every time a mosquito hits me, the affected threshold swells superlatively an itching that drives me crazy on a regular basis.

20 mosquitoes vs. my feet

Last time it was especially bad. On a trip to a water reserve on Saturday I felt like 20 mini-mosquitoes stung on their feet, there was probably not enough autan arrived.

The result: thick feet and an itch from hell.

Honestly, you do not believe how incredibly happy I wanted to scratch myself! Unfortunately that only made things worse. So I was increasingly desperately looking for help, some remedy that would put an end to the itching. I had to search for a long time ...

Here is my list of misery:

1 onion

Half of a fresh onion, pressed directly on the engraving, has helped me great with a bee sting on my finger, since the swelling was gone very quickly. This time, probably too much mosquito poison was involved. Even leaving the onion pieces overnight (yes, with the help of tight socks ...) has not helped much. And the morning after that, the stitches were still much more swollen. However, thanks to Saturday night we had nothing else in the house.

2. Cortisone ointment

Since I also react allergic to insect bites, the pharmacist recommended on Sunday a cortisone ointment. The chilled but short and stopped the itch for a while, but he came back too fast - and even this ointment could do ANYTHING against the swelling. The result: I could only wear sandals (Great, the Hamburg rainy summer) and waddled like a duck.

3. Cetirizine

Because of my insect sting allergy, the pharmacist recommended taking one tablet of cetirizine. I took one tablet on Sundays and Mondays. Maybe these tablets have contributed to the fact that the swelling has eased quite quickly now. An immediate effect, however, was not felt.

4. Autan acute

Autan Acute is a clear gel with chamomile and aloe vera that is really cool. Unfortunately, the effect does not last long and it did not help against the swelling.

5. FINAL Salvation - Cold Wraps

After two sleepless nights, my mother finally recommended cool wraps and that was real salvation: I mixed ice-cold water with apple cider vinegar, then soaked two tea towels and wrapped them around my tortured feet. GOD THANKS, the itching was finally bearable! After the Monday in the office I had to refresh every 15 minutes in the evening, because the feet had a temperature of shortly before boiling point and also shone red. Overnight, I only had to change once and was finally able to sleep again.

Today, three days after the "stitch-day", my feet are back to normal and the itching is just a subtle tingling sensation. Hallelujah, survived.
