Questions to family doctor Dr. med. Petra Bracht

The general practitioner and Naturopath has a private practice in Bad Homburg. Here she will advise you.

GLUTEN-INCOMPATIBILITY: MAIZE AND RICE INSTEAD OF WHEAT AND BARLEY

My grandson found a gluten intolerance. What is that?

Hertha W. (61), Kehl

    Reply from Dr. Bracht:

Gluten intolerance is a reaction that is detrimental to the small intestine to gluten, which is present in certain cereals. These include wheat, spelled, rye, barley, greens, emmer, kamut, bulgur, einkorn and triticale (wheat and rye cross). One in 1, 000 people in Germany is affected, reports the German Celiac Society. Women are more likely to become ill than men. In patients, gluten attacks the mucous membrane of the small intestine, making it difficult, for example, to absorb nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and fats). Gluten intolerance causes symptoms such as flatulence, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of energy. A dietary change to gluten-free foods is necessary and brings a quick relief. How extreme this intolerance is in your grandson, only your doctor can determine by special investigations. It is not uncommon for puberty to heal the disease. Nevertheless, I recommend to eat only small quantities of gluten-containing foods for life. It is suitable corn, rice, potatoes and chickpeas.

BRAIN BAG RELIEF: HELP COOL ENVELOPES

For over a week, I have suffered from bursitis of the left elbow. My doctor is of the opinion that if there is no improvement, I would have to remove the bursa. Would you agree with that?

      Ina H. (55), Worms

        Reply from Dr. Bracht:

No, not at all. An initial bursitis is not an indication for immediate surgery. You should only think of an operation if the inflammation of the bursa is constantly repeated and all other therapies are unsuccessful. Bursae on the joints serve to "cushion" bony protrusions to the outside and thus to protect. These bursae may become acutely or chronically inflamed and cause painful swelling. First, cool your inflamed bursa regularly with cold compresses. In addition, you should take enzymes for inflammation. The pineapple enzyme bromelain, for example, brings great success. But also ointment dressings with anti-inflammatory substances, such as those found in marigold, can relieve the pain. Take care of your arm a little bit, but do not let it form a firm bandage that will completely immobilize it. Because some movement is needed for the healing process, so that the blood can bring all the necessary tissue hormones in place.

REIZBASE: WITH CRANBERRIES AND PUMPKINS AGAINST HARNDRANG

What helps against my chronic irritable bladder? When it gets cold and humid outside, it's especially bad.

          Carmen P. (55), Freiburg

            Reply from Dr. Bracht:

Please first check with your doctor, if there is no acute bladder infection, a bladder stone or even a bladder cancer disease behind the symptoms hides. If these causes are excluded, nature offers a good alternative, especially with a stimulating bladder . Since 1994, cranberry has been found to contain pro-anthocyanins, red dyes, which have antibacterial properties and are particularly effective against bladder and kidney colibacilli. We also know about the healing properties of the pumpkin seeds, which strengthen the bladder. Chew two tablespoons of these seeds daily, maybe as a snack in between. Drink heather tea and bearberry leaf tea, which are great for flushing the bladder. And above all, drink enough, at least two to three liters a day. Most of the urge to urinate is caused by certain situations, mental stress and conflicts. Relaxation techniques such as autogenic training or progressive muscle relaxation after Jakobsen can help with a stimulus bladder . One of these relaxation techniques should be used daily if possible. Find the method that will help you out of the wealth of possibilities.

            YOUR RIGHT AS A PATIENT

What does the cashier pay? When am I entitled to compensation? Good, if you know his right

            CAREFULL FOR FINANCIAL OFFICE UNIMPORTANT

My mother wanted to deduct her home expenses (level 0) from the tax. The tax office says, this is only from care level one. Is that correct?

              Nadja A., Rottweil

No. Also, those in need of care at level 0 can deduct the cost of their home care from the tax. Because for the tax deduction of expenses as an extraordinary burden, the care level does not matter, judged the Federal Finance Court in Munich in the case of an 80-year-old plaintiff. (Ref .: III R 39/05)

                RESIDENCY: NO PAIN

When removing my wisdom tooth, the tongue nerve was damaged. Am I entitled to compensation?

                  Beate S., Lüneburg

Unfortunately, no. The tongue paralysis is a rare but typical event that could not have prevented an X-ray. You would probably have had the procedure carried out if you had known about the risk. An existing residual risk must be borne by the patient. (Az .: 4 U 416/05)

AFTER LASING WE ALSO WEAR GLASSES

In order to get along without glasses, I let my short-sightedness lase. Because of presbyopia, I now have to wear glasses. That annoys me.

                      Sabine Z., Esslingen

Rightly so. You are entitled to damages and compensation. The doctors should have told you before the procedure that after wearing the glasses it may be necessary to wear glasses. (Ref .: 25 0 335/03)

TERMS OF TRANSPORT: CHECKOUT DOES NOT PAY

As a Jehovah's Witness, I refused a third party canned blood and was sent to another hospital. The cash register does not pay now.

                          Anni L., Xanten

The surgery could have been performed in the original hospital. That this did not happen was due to your religious views. From a medical point of view, the relocation was not necessary. That's why your fund does not pay. (Az .: KR 11/07 R)
