With a practiced eye, they not only control their change at the cash register for arithmetic errors. They also look at coins from rare editions or even misprints. Because they are worth much more than the number that stands in front of the coin.

How can a 2-euro coin suddenly be worth up to 500 euros?

Everything rare, such as the Gracia commemorative coin below, has a high value. Some coins are stamped in small numbers. This applies above all to euro coins from small EU states such as Liechtenstein or the Vatican. Also, sometimes small amounts of misprints go into circulation.

How do I recognize precious coins and how can I turn them into money?

That is different. Even tiny details can be decisive for the collector's value. For example, a 20-cent coin from 2004 from Germany (stamp F = stamping location Stuttgart) shows a wrong EU card. It is today worth 10 to 15 euros. However, color changes are often of a chemical nature and therefore worthless. The collector's price depends on the condition of the coin. Collectors generally pay up to two-thirds more than dealers.
