20 kilos away: Diet for Dachshund Dennis

20 kilos down in two years - what many a man dreams, has made this Dachshund. However, there was no treat for the treat.

Every dog owner knows it: The four-legged friend looks at us with his faithful eyes and we can not help but sharing our food with him: some burgers here, a little chocolate there. Then a dog comes to 25 kilos.

25 kilos are not much - at least not if you're a boxer. Or a collie. But if you belong to the Dachshund breed, it looks very different again . At a shoulder height of a maximum of 20 centimeters, the ideal weight is five to nine kilograms.

"I was not even sure what kind of dog breed it was because it was just so fat, " says UT San Diego medical student Brooke Burton about the dachshund she had two years ago. Dennis, as the name of the stripped dog, previously belonged to Brooke's uncle - and he meant it only well with him - until Dennis became so thick that he could barely move and was depressed in the corner.

Brooke knew that if nothing changes, Dennis will die. So she ordered him a strict ( dachshund ) diet - only dry food - and animated him regularly to the sport: Extensive ball games and long walks were now on the agenda!

But as usual with heavy weight loss, the excess skin drooped limp down after the radical diet. The skin folds inflamed, the only way out: immediate surgery! It was enough in the extreme case, not only an OP, but three - and beat the equivalent of 2600 euros to book - for the American student priceless.

The Dackelblick provided her and Dennis remedy: Brooke made a call for donations, the necessary operations could be financed in time. "Dennis is a good lesson for pet owners, " said Dennis doctor Kathleen Ham to UT San Diego, "Eating is not love, what an animal needs is love and attention." And sometimes just a dachshund diet .

Today Dennis weighs almost six kilos. "He likes to romp around in the garden and chase squirrels, " reports Brooke , who is rewarded only with cuddles and games. The age of hot dogs is now a thing of the past for Dennis - his health will thank him.
