For more than a year Andreas Dammrich has been in a vegetative state. His wife Astrid did not want to give him a home. She cares for him at home ...
"Be back soon, I love you." The words of husband Andreas (40) sound Astrid Damrich (38) still in the ear. It is the 28th of August 2014 at 18.30. Andreas has a date with a friend for jogging. He wants to be back by 8 pm so that the couple can put the kids Alexandra (9), Julian (7) and Franziska (4) to bed.
But then the friend stands by the door chalk-white, says: "Come quickly to the hospital, something has happened to Andy."
In the hospital, Astrid receives the terrible news: "Andy had a heart attack, the next 48 hours decide whether he dies." Hours full of fear. Andy Damrich survives, but the father of the family has been in a vegetative state ever since.
The doctors make little hope for Astrid, advise her to look for a home for her husband. But the 38-year-old takes him home. She is convinced: "With our love we bring him back to life."
Friends and work colleagues from the Sparkasse, where Andreas has worked as a consultant, help her to refurbish the guest room in the basement of the house. In January, the father finally comes back to his family.
And indeed, he is making first progress. "He can now turn his head to the left and right, he could not do that in the hospital, " says his wife. But the family has financial problems: "The situation is not good, the house is not yet paid off and the sick pay is running out soon, and we absolutely need a new staircase to bring Andy in his wheelchair in the living room."
But even though Astrid is worried, she does not give up: "My strength comes from the love of my husband, who still makes me happy."
