Off the beaten track ...

Small boats are moored at the front doors, children play in the narrow streets and housewives hang their laundry on leashes high above the canals. This scene seems unusual for Venice . But she is not. Because the true heart of the lagoon city does not beat on St. Mark's Square or the Rialto Bridge. Rather, it is districts such as Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, where the real life of the locals takes place.

It's a pity that most tourists rarely go here. There is something to discover on every corner.

Cozy cafes, low prices

From the dense crowd around the lifeline of the city, the Grand Canal, is very little to feel here. And there are good reasons to avoid the big crowd. Every year, 30 million visitors come to Venice - twice as many as to Rome. And that has consequences: The lines in front of the sights are getting longer and the prices are constantly increasing.

On St. Mark's Square, up to 6 euros are now due for a simple espresso. In Cannaregio in the north but you can find small and inexpensive cafes, where the locals like to stop.

City tour by waterbus

For example, stroll along the Rio Madonna dell'Orto canal, past the church of the same name and the Palazzo Mastelli with its camel figures on its façade. If you stay southwest from here, you will come to the Campo di Ghetto Nuovo, the former Jewish quarter of the city. Today there is again a small Jewish community here.

A little further south on the Cannaregio Canal you have the opportunity to see all the beauties of Venice from the water side. Get in a vaporetto, so a water bus. Lines 51 and 52 orbit the old town (12-hour ticket for 16 euros). At a leisurely pace, you will pass through the Grand Canal and past the Arsenal. And if you change, you can also explore the other islands of the lagoon by vaporetto - such as the glassblower island of Murano or the small Burano with its colorful houses.
