How do you interpret the airport scene at the end of "Actually ... love"?

It's the big unanswered question at the end of the movie "Actually ... Love": Are Karen (Emma Thomspon) and Harry (Alan Rickman) in the end still together? Now a writer of the film spoke plain text.

It is one of the most tragic storylines in "Actually ... Love":

Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman) are a normal, supposedly happy couple. They have been together for 13 years and have two children together. One day, Mia (Heike Makatsch) joins Harry as his new secretary. She begins to flirt violently with him. At the corporate Christmas party, Karen can observe this with her own eyes.

When Karen finds a necklace in Harry's jacket pocket, she thinks she has found her Christmas present. She is happy, but does not say anything - because the necklace is a surprise for Christmas Eve. But on Christmas Eve comes the evil surprise: She does not get a necklace, but a CD. The necklace must have been for someone else. For Mia.

A scene for which Emma Thompson deserves an Oscar. How she realizes that her husband is probably cheating on her. But she tries, for the sake of her children, to stay strong and to show nothing. Even as she finally addresses Harry to the affair at the school concert, he makes it clear to him how he taunts her, her entire life, with it. Incredibly moving!

What does that mean now? Harry is very sorry, but the two overcome this affair? Was that a real affair? What did not we see in the movie?

Then comes the open end: The movie "In fact ... love" ends with the different characters from the movie picking each other up at the airport. Karen and her children pick Harry up from the airport.

The welcome of the two: subcooled. So they are not together anymore?

Then Karen says "We're going home ." So you still live together? So are they still together?

Now a writer of the film "Actually ... love" speaks plain text

One author of the movie "Actually ... Love", Emma Freud, recently watched the movie and answered questions from fans live on Twitter.

A fan asked the big question about Karen and Harry:

@ carlotta429 DEFINITELY had an affair. i begged richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. the whole way.

- emma freud (@emmafreud) 13th December 2015

Carlotta B .: "Did anyone ever ask you if Harry was ACTUALLY having an affair, or if it just seemed like" Alan Rickman's role as villains is usually lovable, but not this. "

Emma Freud: "He had an affair with DEFINITIV. I begged Richard [the director of the film, editor's note] to just make a flirtation with it, but no, he goes all out."

In the scene where Mia's necklace is turned over, is the rumpled bed in the background a hint of this affair? So far we have been completely in the dark ...

And could Karen and Harry survive this crisis? Are you still a couple?

@Perlstrom they stay together but home is not as happy as it was once.

- emma freud (@emmafreud) 13th December 2015

Jill Perlstrom: Could you please explain how the movie was going for the characters of Emma [Thomspon] and Alan [Rickman] or do I have to stay confused forever? I never found out for myself!

Emma Freud: They stay together but their "home" is not as happy as it once was.

So they are still together, probably for the sake of the children. But happy, is something else. That makes this whole storyline even more tragic ...
