Eat smart

It only exists for a short time and it is expensive. Asparagus, the king of vegetables, freshly pricked and bought at the retailer of our confidence, currently costs us between 500 and 500 g between five and seven euros. But even supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl or Rewe offer green and white asparagus in their displays at an affordable price .

Where we get our asparagus depends on the quality and freshness. Many customers are convinced that the barley can only be fresh and of high quality if it comes directly from the farmer. Then it is juicy, has the perfect thickness and squeaks. But is that really true? Or can the consumer just as well expect a high quality at a favorable price in the supermarkets and discounters? We answer the question and refer to a recent study by the NDR.

He has sampled cheap asparagus in the supermarkets (Edeka & Rewe) and discounters (Aldi & Lidl) and compared with experts price, weight and quality.

On behalf of the NDR assessed a nutritionist of the Food Center Niedersachsen the freshness of asparagus. The Aldi asparagus, the color was even white-yellow, the tips closed. The cut edges were a bit dry, but when pressed in there was still water coming out of the bars - overall a relatively fresh quality impression.

Lidl

Here the asparagus at the same price as Aldi is assigned to the trading class II and are particularly noticeable in the different thickness of the rods.

supermarkets

Edeka

Asparagus is offered here from the commercial class II at a price of 3.33 euros.

The asparagus spears at Lidl and Edeka no longer squealed loudly. The cut edges were already frayed, but water was still leaking out. Overall, the asparagus made both editors an edible impression.

Rewe

The cheapest asparagus is Hungarian organic asparagus class II at a price of 4.49 euros. The quality, however, was below acceptable levels. Musty smell, the tips were coated with a slimy film, no squeaking, dried out edges, water was no longer indulging in impressions - this asparagus was inedible and should not have been sold according to dietitian.

Conclusion

Since every day the discounters and supermarkets are newly supplied, the price-performance ratio can be different every day. In this NDR study from 6.5.2013 shows that the price does not decide on the quality of asparagus. Whether from the discounter or from the farmer - checking the asparagus for freshness characteristics appearance, water content and noise is the best guarantee for fresh, tasty asparagus .
