Coke, lemonade or iced tea may taste delicious, but the soft drinks are not healthy. Even small amounts of sweet drinks can trigger lung diseases, a new study shows.

A refreshment complacent? Then you should rather resort to water or fresh fruit juices. For a new study by the University of Adelaide, which was first published in January 2012, has found that coke, lemonade and Co. can be responsible not only for heart problems and obesity, but also for asthma and COPD (chronic lung diseases).

The study was conducted from 2008 to 2010 on 16, 907 Australians aged 16 or over. Of these, 13.3 percent had asthma and 15.6 percent had COPD. The researchers took a closer look at the state of health and the consumption of soft drinks of the subjects and found a connection. Coke, lemonade, sports drinks and even mineral water with flavor were among the soft drinks.

The result was surprising in two respects: on the one hand, the sweet drinks double the risk for respiratory ailments compared to the test subjects who completely abstain from soft drinks. On the other hand, the researchers found that half a liter a day from the sugar brew may be responsible for this negative effect.

Soft drinks can cause lung problems

This increases the risk of disease, the more soft drinks a person consumes. According to Study Director Zumin Shi, this effect has a particularly strong effect on smokers. The smokers also had a 6.6-fold higher chance of suffering from asthma or COPD.

Another reason to switch from soft drinks to pure water: apart from the health problems, the drinks contain a lot of sugar, which ultimately manifests on the hips. Sure, Coke and Co. taste good especially on hot days. But there are plenty of delicious alternatives such as unsweetened tea, fresh juices or home-made smoothies. With these drinks you also know what's inside!
