What is a birthmark or liver spot actually?
A birthmark is a limited, benign malformation of the skin cells. Because most of them are responsible for the tanning of the skin responsible for melanocytes, liver spots or moles also have a dark color.
Are birthmarks contagious?
Birthmarks, liver spots, freckles and age spots may develop with age. That some people are already covered with many liver spots from birth, is due to the genes. In others, the spots develop in conjunction with UV light. If you are in the sun a lot, new liver spots or old ones are getting darker.
The reason: UV rays damage and deform the cells of the skin. It tries to protect the formation of melanocytes from dangerous UV radiation and forms more melanin. This can lead to new, dark malformations of the skin. However, moles are not contagious neither from person to person, nor on their own body.
However, anyone who has a genetic tendency to freckles and birthmarks should avoid spending much time in the sun. This ensures that harmless birthmarks can become malignant skin cancer.
