Beauty is not everything

She broke her face in a terrible accident. But that was what Melissa first learned to love herself. A story for more confidence.

She had been looking forward to this day for ages. The reunion with her best friends should be unforgettable. That's what it became, because Melissa's scars will forever remind her of the meeting at the lake. The young woman broke her face in an accident. She tells on her blog how the experience changed her life.

The day started as wonderful as expected. After all have started their own lives, found a job, started relationships and finished, the five best friends from college days should finally see each other again. The meeting took place on a lake where the girls could spend hours exchanging their latest experiences and experiences alternated with a refreshing dip in the lake.

In the euphoria, the girlfriends had devised a special kick: Elegant as Tarzan they swung on the rope of a raise in the water. It was really fun for a while. Also the third jump started like the previous one. At the highest point she released the rope, but Melissa's foot had caught in the undergrowth. The young woman was thrown headlong against a rock in the shallow water. Her face is broken.

Immediately her friends rushed to help Melissa. She did not even remember what happened next, even though she was still conscious when the emergency doctors arrived. As soon as possible she is taken to the nearest hospital, from where she is relocated to a special clinic. Her friends are always at her side.

The next thing Melissa remembers is the drip in her arm and concern for her cell phone as she wakes up in the back of an ambulance. Even in this predicament, the young woman does not lose her sense of humor: she asks to be photographed, to make her believe that this has just happened.

After the accident, Melissa is no longer the same. All the bones of her face are broken. But it's not just the four metal plates that hold her head together after a five-hour operation that changes her. Because the biggest change is invisible. Melissa learns to love herself. Her face is broken, but she is in life. What do externals play for a role? The cosmetic damage teaches the young woman a completely new self-confidence.

The accident is a year ago when the 25-year-old tells her story today. Only a few tiny scars and another face are reminiscent of the accident. Although friends and family assure Melissa that her appearance has not changed, the young woman knows that is not the case. Her face is held together by metal plates. Her laugh has changed, the corners of her mouth are different than before and her eye area seems to behave differently. These are little things that strike Melissa. But all this is not as important to her as it used to be.

Once upon a time, the 25-year-old's life revolved around her looks, her figure and her superficiality. But only a broken face has allowed her to love herself as she is. Beauty is not everything, especially not if you are so close to death.

For two months Melissa looked into a face full of puffiness, hematomas and dark scars. The workout, with which the young woman wanted to keep her figure disciplined, stayed away. All the greater was the fear of the next time on the scales. How much weight would Melissa have gained if she'd skipped sports for as long as never before? The flashing figures are what changed something in the self-confidence of the 25-year-olds. Melissa weighs no more grams. At this point in time, she realizes for the first time that life revolves around more than externals.

Suddenly, the 25-year-old realizes that it's neither her figure nor her face shape that makes her stand out. She can laugh, climb stairs, drive a car, meet friends, take a shower alone, work, write and sing. Melissa can live. Suddenly, the little things that the 25-year-old appreciates in her life are things that are far from any externalities that make her unique . Her face was broken, but her self-confidence strengthened. A perfect look is not what makes a person adorable. It's the inner values that count.

Almost a year to the day since face surgery. Grateful is an understatement.
