Gaffer took pictures instead of helping injured people

On Saturday there was a serious accident on the A2 near Magdeburg. Shocking: None of the passing motorists helped the injured.

It is unbelievable how inhuman the gazers have behaved during a serious accident on the A2 near Magdeburg on the weekend. Several cars had crashed into each other on Saturday, one was thrown in the air and came to rest on the roof. Injured people lay in the street.

But no one stopped to help!

Bad enough that none of the passing motorists felt it necessary to stop to help the injured people and protect them from passing cars. But it got even harder: Many of the passing gazers pulled out their cell phones and took pictures of the scene of the accident.

Even the police were shocked, spoke of an "indescribable behavior" of motorists. The accident victims were literally strayed around, for a long time the cars crowded over the hard shoulder at the accident site, which moved over two and a half of the three highway lanes.

Only the rescue services could end the situation. The highway was closed for hours.

The agonizing question remains: Are not these gazers ashamed? Did not a rest of decency jibe in them as they pressed the triggers off their cameras?

To help these injured people would have been their moral duty. Had they been there, they would certainly have wished for nothing more than a merciful man who takes care of them.

Added to the moral misconduct is: Failure to help is an offense. Those who do not help risk a fine or up to one year's imprisonment under the Criminal Code.

It is understandable that many people are afraid of doing even more harm through help. But often, some help could help to limit physical and mental harm to an accident victim. As a reminder, in this order helpers should respond at an accident site.

  • to secure the scene of an accident
  • provide overview
  • Call the emergency
  • To provide first aid

Those who are not sure of their knowledge of first aid should take a refresher course. Many rescue services regularly offer such courses. An example: The module "Behavior after a traffic accident" at the German Red Cross - takes 90 minutes.
