Since 1880 the weather has been recorded accurately. 2014 and 2015 were the warmest years ever. On average, the temperature was around 15 degrees Celsius over all ocean and land areas worldwide, according to the US Climate Agency NOAA . This is another 0.06 degrees warmer than 2015. In November, this value seemed to be even higher. Luckily that was not confirmed. The world weather organization WMO also assumes that it could be 1.2 degrees warmer in 2016 than 2015.

Also in Germany it was warmer

The temperature increase is not just worldwide. Germany is also affected by the higher temperatures. The first eleven months of the year were above average.

But not only the temperatures rose: Unusually were also the many, extreme thunderstorms in the summer. Heat and thunderstorms not only resulted in many casualties, but also led to poor harvest results in many places.

While parts of the world had much colder temperatures in 2016, in others - such as Alaska - the increase is clearly noticeable: "Average temperatures in Alaska have risen by ten degrees Fahrenheit (5.56 degrees Celsius) since the 1980s, " she explains NOAA expert Rick Thoman.

The Arctic ice is growing slowly

This autumn, the Arctic ice grew very slowly compared to previous years. Large ice surfaces are missing completely. This is disturbing, because without large ice sheets in the Arctic, the sunlight is not reflected enough and the oceans become even hotter. It remains to be expected how the weather will be in 2017. Experts do not give exact forecasts so far.
