Travelogue Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: The most beautiful sides of the Baltic Sea

Insider tips from the editor

Beach chair, sea buckthorn and nudist! That should be the common prejudices against the Mecklenburg Baltic coast! Of course, these prejudices are true, but the state by the sea has much more to offer! You want to know what? Then you are exactly right here: My insider travel tips for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern !

The best travel time for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Actually, any travel time for the coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is ideal. In spring and summer, the beach and for die-hard bathing fans calls the Baltic Sea (temperatures around 19 degrees), in autumn the spa hotels in Warnemünde (Hotel "Neptune" and "Hohe Düne") offer wellness holidays at low season rates. In winter, of course, numerous Christmas markets attract visitors. The largest of these is the Rostock Christmas Market. My tip: If you do not like the hustle and bustle, then go to the small medieval Christmas market, which is located on the Rostock market, where it is much quieter and more comfortable.

What you should do, if you are in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:

The standard program

Be sure to eat fish, go for a walk on the lake and join a harbor cruise! Of course, these are typical tourist activities, but not without reason! The fish is fresh caught, nothing makes you feel more that you are on vacation than a day at the sea and a harbor cruise is now the cheap alternative to a real cruise! The best way to take in the Rostock city harbor (section "Am Strande"), the harbor tour, which drives you to Warnemünde. So you drive out for a short time on the open sea. Costs for adults about seven euros. Incidentally, the best fish roll is available on the cutter "Backfisch Udo"!

The insider tips

Have breakfast on the beach! Get up at seven o'clock, get something from the baker and enjoy the beginning of the day by the sea! This is the ideal start for the perfect holiday!

If you are planning a beach day, but the beach is too crowded for you, ask the locals where they always go swimming. This is guaranteed to be on a less crowded beach and you get a first-hand insider tip. My personal recommendation for the Rostock area is the back beach section "Diedrichshagen". From the bus stop "Warnemünde Werft" take the line 36 and get off at the stop "Stolteraer Weg" and a dream beach is waiting for you behind the small grove!

Experience culture

If you are tired of the beach and looking for cultural activity, there are a lot of ideas:

With the nostalgic bath train "Molli" from Bad Doberan to Kühlungsborn drive!

See the Baroque Old Town in Neustrelitz.

Visit the Amber Museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten.

In the hunting lodge "Gelbensande" learn something about the Mecklenburg nobility.

Explore the marine world in the "Ozeaneum" in Stralsund.

And that's not enough choice: from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you can travel abroad very quickly. With the ferry from Rostock to Gedser you are in two hours in Denmark and pay only about 10 Euro per person. Alternatively, you can also travel with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern train ticket within three hours (Hbf Rostock) in the Polish Szczecin.

Typical souvenirs from "Meck-Pomm"

Sea buckthorn products in all variations. There are liqueurs, juices, lollipops, body lotion - there is almost nothing that can not be made with sea buckthorn!

So get the maritime holiday decoration in the house!
