Only very well know what natural cosmetics actually means and what great advantages they have over conventional cosmetics, do the least.

What is organic cosmetics?

A correct definition for natural cosmetics and the corresponding guidelines does not exist. In general, these include products made from natural, animal and environmentally friendly raw materials. It deliberately dispenses with the following synthetic ingredients:

  • Polythylene glycol - short PEG
  • Parabens,
  • silicones,
  • paraffins,
  • petroleum products
  • Synthetic fragrances

In comparison, the following ingredients are processed in most natural cosmetic products:

  • natural oils, such as olive oil, soybean oil and jojoba oil
  • essential oils
  • herbal extracts
  • natural fragrances
  • blossom water
  • Beeswax and
  • Fats, such as coconut oil, cocoa or shea butter

Especially for allergy sufferers who quickly react with skin irritations to artificial ingredients, natural cosmetic products are outstanding. That would be a major advantage, but what are the reasons?

5 advantages of natural cosmetics

  1. Free from mineral oils Glycerol, paraffins and silicones are waste products from the mineral oil industry and are used to produce many traditional beauty products. Nasty, right? Paraffins, for example, form a water-impermeable layer on the skin and are used particularly frequently in the production of lipsticks. Natural cosmetics completely dispense with these synthetic additives and instead relies on vegetable oils and waxes. By the way: Stiftung Warentest tested 35 lip balms in March. 15 products passed the test.
  2. Preservatives? Wrong! Contact allergies with cosmetic products are a problem for around 80, 000 people each year. Synthetic preservatives, such as isothiazolinone, are particularly frequently responsible for this. Mostly these substances are used because of their antibacterial effect. Parabens are similarly problematic due to their hormone-like action and the emulsifier polyethylene glycol (PEG), which makes the skin more permeable to active substances and thus also to pollutants. In natural cosmetic products, on the other hand, only natural preservatives are used, which only have a very low risk of allergies.
  3. Fragrances and colors from nature Man-made fragrances and dyes are known to have an irritating effect and often lead to allergic reactions. Organic cosmetics rely on fragrances and dyes from nature, such as essential oils, floral water or herbal extracts. Of course, these ingredients can also lead to allergic reactions in sensitive skin. However, fragrances are only dosed very low, so that in these small amounts they are usually well tolerated by allergy sufferers. However, if you are prone to special sensitivity, you should also play it safe.
  4. Animal experiments? Not for natural cosmetics! From an ethical point of view, natural cosmetic products are the better choice. For some time now, it has been illegal to officially sell any products that have been tested on animals in the EU, but there are niches. Thus, the prohibition applies only to substances that have been expressly manufactured for cosmetics. Other ingredients that z. B. also be used for the production of drugs, may continue to be tested on animals. That's why the customer can never really be sure about conventional cosmetics. For natural cosmetics, on the other hand, there are binding ethical rules that have been valid and trustworthy since the 1st of January 1998.
  5. Packing: as much as necessary, as little as possible A huge packaging for a tiny little product: You look for such Mogelpackungen in natural cosmetics in vain. Rather, the intention in the production is always only so much packaging to create the product, as is really necessary. The commitment to produce less and less waste is enormously high in the industry. The ultimate goal is fully compostable or reusable packaging.
