More and more women seeking help in women's shelters must be dismissed: Lack of space

More than every third woman was already a victim of violence. In need, a woman can seek refuge in the women's shelter - usually. But the women's shelters are suffering from lack of space!

Sometimes you really wonder what's going on with this world. How can it be that so many people are in need and need help? So many people need protection that they do not even know where to find it anymore.

Women's shelters also complain about lack of space. More and more often they have to reject women seeking help.

The Central Information Office for Autonomous Women's Shelters (ZIF) announced in a press release that "the search for a free women's playground in many places is like a hurdle race". That's why the staff, residents and other activists organized a protest action earlier this month. They held 16 deckchairs in front of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Berlin, where the Equality and Women's Ministers of the Länder (GFMK) were conferring on. Each lounge chair symbolized a federal state and was "occupied" by the women with a towel: symbolizing the dramatic lack of women's playgrounds.

The GFMK promised the women's shelters in 2014 to come up with concrete proposals for adequate funding for women's shelters. However, according to the ZIF, these proposals never came. Instead, "for 39 years, we have been waiting for a secure and needs-based financing, since then the responsibility for this between federal, state and local governments has been pushed back and forth without result, " said a quote from the ZIF press release.

17, 000 women a year in the currently 353 women's homes and at least 41 women's shelters help, but 20, 000 must be rejected - estimates the ZIF. The situation in big cities is particularly difficult. In Cologne alone, over 800 women were rejected in 2014, reports RTL. One of the women who was rejected should have died the same day, according to RTL.

Please do not be afraid to go looking for women's shelters if you are in need.
