"Nobody teaches us how to stand on our own two feet"

Almost 18 and hardly anything useful learned. A student from Cologne criticizes the German educational system with a cynical tweet.

"I'm almost 18 and have no idea about taxes, rent or insurance.

But I can write a poetry analysis. In 4 languages. "

With these harsh words, a 17-year-old student from Cologne criticizes the German education system. In a second tweet, the young woman who calls herself Nainablabla on Twitter placates: "Sure, we learn important things at school . But no one teaches us how to stand on your own two feet later. "With these two tweets, the student hit an important nerve in the Twitter community: the two sets have so far been favored 12, 000 times, and so retweeted just under 7, 000 times.

I'm almost 18 and have no idea about taxes, rent or insurance. But I can write a poetry analysis. In 4 languages.

Math, German, English, history - we learn many important things at school. But what nobody teaches us: Practical things in life, something like idea about tenancy law or an idea about how to make a tax return.

These are the things we are confronted with just when we finish high school and begin to stand on our own two feet. First home, first car, suddenly we need our own insurance - but at school we have never heard anything.

If the new apartment suddenly has mold on the walls, the knowledge of parables and poems does not help us at all. How do I get my landlord to fight this fungus as fast as possible? When may I cut rent ? Or the first accident - what do I have to do to get money from the accident opponent? We would need such knowledge then.

But do we have at the most, if our parents have given us some information along the way. But honestly, parents have a lot to do with us and most of them do their best when it comes to preparing their children for life outside their parents' home. But now they can not teach us anything.

And that's where the school system would have to work. Cooking, insurance, health knowledge and a few basic information about German law - we would need something like that. A few hours less incomprehensible-and-unnecessary-math or physics-for-future-scientists, but a little more life practice - such a timetable we would really celebrate!
