Amnesty International is fighting for the lives of the young Brishna

On May 1, 2014, ten-year-old Brishna was raped. Now relatives want to kill her, because it brought shame on her family.

Little Brishna from the Afghan province of Kunduz is just ten years old when she is being raped on May 1 this year. The blood loss of the girl is so high that at times even her life is in danger.

Members of the women's rights organization Women for Afghan Women bring Brishna to a hospital after the rape, where the girl's injuries can be treated. After being released from the hospital in June, Brishna is being sheltered in one of seven Women For Afghan Women's shelters.

However, the girl's relatives demand that Brishna return to them. As Dr. Hassina Sarwari, the head of the women's shelter where the child is staying, picks Brishna out of the hospital, tells her an aunt of the girl that her males would kill her and throw her into the river. The reason: The fact that Brishna was raped, it should have brought shame on her family. You are threatened with honor killings .

Until July members of Women For Afghan Women can still protect Brishna. Then the police come to the women's shelter to bring the girl back to her family. After Brishna's health has improved, at least physically, custody of her is back with her family.

Rapist of Brishna in custody

Brishna's rapist Mohammed Amin has confessed to the crime. While still in custody, he is said to have offered to marry Brishna to restore her honor.

However, thanks to the commitment of Amnesty International, this will not happen. The now global protest that is designed to prevent an innocent girl from having to endure enough suffering ends up putting the Afghan government under pressure. Brishna's case was heard in a court in Kabul. Her rapist is expected to go to jail for 20 years.

But Brishna is far from safe. Amnesty International is calling on people around the world to prevent the honor killing of the 10-year-old girl.

Since 2009, there is a law that protects girls from assaults, including honor killings, by their family. At the same time, however, according to Amnesty International, there is also a penalty penalty provision for acts that serve to restore family honor.
