The surprising break between the two princesses

All of Scandinavia wonders why they have radio silence.

They were once so close. Among Europe's princesses, no friendship has been as close as that of Victoria (35) and Mette-Marit (39) . At each meeting, they stuck their heads together, laughing, whispering, always intimate.

But by now radio silence seems to prevail. And all over Scandinavia it is puzzled how could the surprising break between the princesses come. Is it Mette-Marit's jealousy - the jealousy of a life that just does not seem to suit her?

Already at the christening of the small Estelle (1) last May, everyone wondered why just Mette-Marit did not appear, although husband Haakon (39) is godfather of Victoria's little daughter.

Willem-Alexander (45) invited young heirs to their traditional meeting shortly before his coronation. All came, except for Prince Frederik, who - apologetically - participated in the Wasa Run. But even Mette-Marit did not show up. Because she wanted to avoid Victoria? "The princess had a private program, " was the poor explanation of the court. In fact, she was sighted shopping in New York.

In Norway, there is a growing concern that Mette-Marit increasingly takes time out from the royal life. Hiking in the Himalayas, a trip to India with a "spiritual advisor", a hospital stay in Austria. Scandinavian newspapers already suspected in late 2011 that the princess is in a serious crisis. But why?

Many are thinking of Mette-Marit's past. As a young woman she celebrated wild parties in Oslo, enjoying her freedom to the fullest. Then the life at the royal court, with strict court protocol and the constant public attention - the conversion could hardly be brighter.

But unlike other middle-class princesses, Mette-Marit has apparently never gotten used to her new role. On the contrary, she seems to feel increasingly uncomfortable in this world at the court - a world where Victoria has been at home since her birth.

Of course, Mette envies her friend's sympathies, the enthusiasm she encounters. Of course, this also applies to her Haakon, who has been a close friend of Victoria since Kindestagen, and only traveled with her to the Arctic in 2009.

No wonder if Mette-Marit feels marginalized time after time, and there is also a dose of jealousy in the game. Victoria would perhaps be the only one who could help her now. Who will stand by her in a friendly and warm-hearted way that could reconcile her to this royal world that is still foreign to Mette-Marit ...
