Mama BlogDresses for children and babies: how much is too much?

Mama blogger Timea from Munich writes for Wunderweib.de about her new life as the mom of a 1-year-old daughter. Every week she learns something new, she wonders, laughs and cries.

How many clothes does a child need?

This week she writes about Klamottenberge and Kaufrausch in the first baby year.

Shopping frenzy in the first baby year: What you can save yourself

During my pregnancy and in Léla's first months of life, I had a veritable frenzy. After I had scoured all the department stores and online ordering services, there were also several flea markets. I could not get enough of the cute baby clothes. From many sides it was called "typical" with the first child. But I did not stop, the feeling for my real own offspring to buy adorable little dresses enchanted me.

The biggest mistake you can make is buying clothes for the future.

Do you know what I mean? For example, if you choose the winter overalls and winter boots at the flea market in autumn, but basically do not even know what size the baby will wear in two months. Léla is a maikind and I have bought her senseless warm clothes. When it finally got cold, nothing suited her anymore.

Why buy a Halloween costume? Because it makes the child happy!

Léla is now almost a year and a half old and I still like to go shopping for her. But it is no longer this unstoppable, humid rush. If I buy something now, it's mostly because she really needs it. Mostly. As I write this I have to laugh, because just a week ago I bought her a completely pointless and wonderfully charming Halloween costume. A bat with black tutu. 20 euros for a dress that is meant for a party that we do not even celebrate. No matter. Every weekend is Halloween here. For fun, we put the dress on Léla and admire her all day long. She also likes it and laughs cute when she looks in the mirror. Well invested 20 euros.

Kostüme für Kinder kaufen macht insofern auf jeden Fall Sinn, als die Kinder sich auf jeden Fall darüber freuen!
Léla loves her Halloween costume.

For sure, many will contradict me now. Futile, waste of money, buy cheap at the flea market. Yes I do that as well. And I like to buy new things. I love strolling through flea markets on weekends, trading with salespeople, chatting and taking one or the other. Last Sunday I got a pair of branded shoes for Léla for 4 euros and an unworn anorak for 10 euros, which costs more than my jacket in the original.

In fact, branded clothes are something I would never buy new, they have little reason to exist in my world. Let's be honest, most of our sprouts bear just for a few months. There are also used clothes or cheap from a Swedish textile company. More and more often I notice that I buy toys or books at flea markets. Often the clothes are too messy for me, too rough or smell like cellar. I prefer to buy the basics anew and look for the special at flea markets. Or just after much too big winter clothes.

My shopping spree in the first year, however, had an advantage. Since so much had accumulated in the short time, I was able to build up after a year a phenomenal flea market stall. The cash register rang, Léla's belongings were the bestseller. I was most pleased when I sold clothes that I had bought for the same price at the same flea market the year before. Or if I could pocket at least two euros for an unworn, meaningless dress.

Super Sache: Auf Flohmärkten Baby-Klamotten kaufen, die viel zu schnell zu klein geworden sind.
Neat selection: Timea's first flea market stall with loads of baby clothes.

So, not so bad, it will come off if you do not hoard. And yet, every once in a while I am in for pointless Halloween costumes. Because they please our heart. A sight that is worth it, especially later on photos.

What senseless clothes have you already bought your favorites? Report in the comments :)

Best regards,

your Timea
