They think you eat salmon - you eat a different kind of fish

The Germans love salmon. It is the most popular fish on our dining tables. But those who buy Alaskan salmon do not eat salmon!

The fact that there is a lot of haggling in the food industry and that there are many injustices is no surprise to anyone. But to be so directly deceived, we would not have thought!

Do you like salmon? Preferably the Alaskan salmon, which tastes so mild?

You are not alone with that. Alaska pollock was the most consumed fish in 2013, accounting for 22.3% of total fish consumption in Germany. But did you know that if you eat Alaska salmon or salmon in general, you will not eat salmon at all?

In fact, Alaskan salmon are the Pacific pollack that belongs to the cod family! In the trade he is sold only under the name "Alaska salmon", although he does not belong to the salmon.

The "Alaskan Pollock" is a pure invention of the food industry from the 1980s, to better market the Pacific Pollack, which is mostly used in fish fingers .

However, the Alaska salmon has a major shortcoming, which is why you could actually identify it as a fake salmon: it is white and not salmon red! Because codfish do not eat crustaceans, as does the salmon, and therefore naturally do not absorb any red dyes.

That is why he is often simply dyed with the dye Cochenillerot A. And this dye is not without danger: in Norway, Finland or the United States, for example, it is classified as hazardous to health and potentially carcinogenic, in the US, the dye is therefore even prohibited in food.

In Europe, the colorant is still allowed in foods, however, there must be warnings on the products: "May affect the activity and attention of children."

Therefore, look at the next fish purchase the packaging exactly.
