Barren beauty

The rays of the setting sun dip the rocks in El Golfo in the southwest of Lanzarote s in fiery red. To the right behind shimmers the blue sea and left of the black lava beach green shines the crater water of a sunken volcano ...

In some places nature celebrates true color orgies on the Spanish Canary Island. Just a few kilometers away, the visitor feels like in a moonscape: Between beige and red, the colors of the wild volcanic mountains commute. But green vineyards, snow-white fishing villages and great beaches quickly show that Lanzarote is also this: a liveable and very adorable Atlantic island.

Colorful market bustle in narrow streets

This is especially true for the former island capital Teguise. Sundays is market here. Then there is a hustle and bustle in the streets and visitors can buy not only all kinds of souvenirs but also a timple - a small five-string guitar, as it has been built here for centuries.

To Teguise also belongs the place Guatiza with its cactus garden. In the park planned by the artist César Manrique, succulent lovers will find over 1, 000 cactus species from all over the world. Here, in the dry-hot island climate, they thrive magnificently.

Whirlwinds arrive in the coastal resort of Arrecife, to which Lanzarote's inhabitants made their new capital after a pirate raid on Teguise (1852). Here you can go shopping after a day at the sea or in the mountains .

Tip: the Castillo de San José on a promontory in front of the city. From the fortress you have a great view of the white houses Lanzarote s - an unforgettable souvenir.
