The shared-dreaming phenomenon

Sometimes the partner expresses the thought we were pondering about. Sometimes the person we thought of at the same time called. Can we also dream the same thing as a person close to us?

The question of whether two people can share the same dream ("shared dream") has not (yet) dealt with a scientific study. However, there are some documented cases of similar dreams of very close people. These include couples, mother and child or father and child, twins, as well as people in long-term relationships.

These testimonials are based only on the statements of those affected - so the matches of dreams can not be verified. The only way to review it: ask two people independently or have person A tell one half and person B the second - before telling each other the dreams. Another difficulty: Often one can only remember fragments of his dreams, most of it quickly disappears.

On the other hand, there are tums that are widespread, such as flying, falling or coming late. Is that an indication that there must be dreams that two people dream about at the same time, in the same place? Two dreams in two heads, which agree exactly down to the last detail?

How does Shared Dreams come about?

There are several approaches to explain this phenomenon. The widespread assumption is that similar conscious and unconscious experiences also lead to similar dreams. If two people spend a lot of time together, have comparable ways of thinking and share experiences, the probability of a "shared dream" increases.

Another explanation attempt is the telepathy, thus a kind of thought transmission. However, there is no proof of telepathic abilities so far.

Due to the lack of evidence, multiple definitions circulate about what a shared dream is. Thus, some esotericists assume that strangers can dream the same and dreams are not individual, but form their own world, which every human enters in sleep.

Whether it is proven or not: there are reports of experiences of the same dreams. Maybe we should tell people close to us more often about our dreams - maybe they just dreamed the same thing ...
