definition

Insulin is a fat-insoluble hormone based on proteins, which is produced in the pancreas and acts as a messenger in the body. Together with the hormone glucagon it is responsible for the regulation of glucose concentration in the blood. Its enormous importance is based on the ability to lower the blood sugar level as the sole, endogenous hormone. In addition to the regulation of the sugar content in the blood, insulin also affects the fat and amino acid metabolism as well as the potassium balance in the human body.
