The broom heath is a joyful splash of color in the autumn garden . The evergreen dwarf shrub is a maximum of one meter high and its purple and pink flowers glow from late summer to fall.

The optical texture of the shrub, also called Erika, is characteristic for its natural habitat, the heath landscapes. The plant, known by its Latin name Calluna vulgaris, prefers sunny to half shady sites and prefers dry or moist soil .

As an ornamental plant the Calluna is cultivated in about 10, 000 varieties with different flowering periods and colorations of the leaves and flowers .

A very special kind among them is the bud heath . Until the winter it carries a large number of closed buds, giving the impression that the plant is also blooming in winter. Thus, the heather plant, which is on average 10 to 15 years old, a permanent greening in the garden .

From the taste buds of the broom heath the delicious heather honey is won . Therefore, the broom heath has taken an important role in beekeeping as bee pasture. From her, the hardworking collectors can win nectar, which contains 24 percent sugar. Every single flower of the bush contributes to an abundant harvest with the daily production of 0.12 mg sugar.

Even butterflies and their caterpillars like to be happy at the broom heath. As a fodder plant, it supplies numerous, sometimes endangered species and thus contributes to the preservation of butterfly diversity.
