From because of male domain

Hair loss in women is just as possible as in the male sex. The sex hormone testosterone , which also occurs in the female body, can cause the loss of hair. How this works and what other causes of hair loss come into consideration, you can find out here.

Hair loss is not a male domain

Hair loss in women is not uncommon: According to experts, more than half of women over the age of 50 suffer from the loss of their hair. The process is similar to that of men, but is less pronounced. Thus, it is more common for women to the so-called diffuse hair loss, which spreads relatively evenly over the scalp. As this form of hair loss progresses creepingly, many women do not notice it for a long time. Only at about 50 percent loss of hair loss in women is visible to the naked eye.

What role does testosterone play?

Just like men, hereditary factors and hormones are the most important factors for hair loss in women. In men, the sex hormone testosterone in the hair roots is converted - it creates the biochemical intermediate dihydrotestosterone (DHT). But that alone does not cause any hair loss . Only if there is a hereditary hypersensitivity to DHT, does this steroid hormone cause the death of the hair roots - the hair thus falls out and does not grow back. In women, this process works similarly: If they have hypersensitive hair roots, it can also lead to hair loss - but only when the menopause occurs.

For then the concentration of the sex hormone decreases estrogen, and the proportion of testosterone also present in the female body increases. The diffuse hair loss in women is attributed by experts mainly to the fact that they naturally have a lower amount of testosterone.

Other possible causes of hair loss in women

Hair loss in women may have other causes that are not related to the hormones. These include iron and zinc deficiency, but even serious diseases such as over- or under-function of the thyroid can be the cause of the loss of hair. Therefore, it is always recommended to visit a doctor in case of hair loss
