It's that easy

The geranium is the most popular German balcony plant. No wonder! Already with a bit of affection she blooms lavishly untiringly.

1. Pelargonium, geranium - what is it?

Although we always speak of geraniums, the balcony flowers are all pelargonium, originally from Africa. The actual geranium, however, is a herbaceous, hardy plant. It blooms, too, but never in red - and its flowers are small and delicate.

2. What helps with brown spots?

The plants are susceptible to the so-called geranium rust. This is mainly caused by too much moisture, for example in rainy summers. It's a fungus, but fungicides only help conditionally. Better off all affected leaves - so the plant gets more air.

3. Can you multiply the plant?

Almost all Pelargonium can be propagated by cuttings. By the beginning of September you can cut about 15 centimeters long shoots. Remove the lower leaves and the flowers. If you put the shoots in the potting soil and water regularly, they will soon take root and you have one more plant.

4. Can geraniums be planted?

Who wants to put the balcony beauties in the bed, should pay attention to the variety. Seed-grown plants work well because they grow fast. Even vigorous plants with fragrant leaves are good for planting. Varieties with patterned leaves or very large inflorescences prefer to stay well protected in pots and boxes.

5. How do you thrive best?

Even if there are different varieties: All pelargoniums love the sun. In the shade, they grow rather meager and are prone to fungal attack. Nevertheless, they do not tolerate dryness, their soil should always be moist. However, there must be no waterlogging.

6. What to do with bulging leaves?

Do not worry, corky knobs are nothing but water retention. If over-abundant, the plant collects moisture until some cells burst and are discarded. With even casting, the bumps disappear by themselves.
