Doctors botch!

It happens again and again and for years with rising tendency: 3932 faulty treatments were confirmed only by the experts of the medical service of the health insurance (MDK) in the past year.

What is particularly striking: Incorrect treatment has been most prevalent in dental pulp and root therapy, as well as in the treatment of tooth decay. We'll tell you what you can do if the dentist has made botch.

First complain, then repair

If the crown is crooked, you can not bite properly with the new implant, or if the third person presses beyond normal adjustment problems or causes chafing, you can complain and tell your dentist to fix it. The doctor decides for himself whether he will make improvements or make replacement.

May I change the dentist?

If the trouble continues because the dentist refuses necessary repairs, or the dentures are completely unusable, the patient can cancel the faulty treatment and change the dentist. Important: As a legally insured, please consult first with your health insurance!

Who bears the costs?

Follow-up costs of a follow-up treatment by a colleague must be paid by the first-time doctor as compensation. Basically, for two years the dentist has to repair for free or to replace damages caused by "bungling" like a secondary treatment - if the work was defective from the beginning.

If dispute turn on a reviewer

If a dispute arises as to whether there has been a mistake in treatment, a regular assessment by a neutral expert is advisable. A further treatment should therefore start only after an appraisal. Once the damage has been eliminated, it is barely detectable, so you can lose the cost of the aftertreatment or claims for damages.

Who can help?

The statutory health insurance companies can help with extrajudicial legal advice and obtain a medical opinion from the MDK. Incidentally, the health insurances will in future have to process patient applications for benefits or treatments within three weeks. If the deadline expires without a message to the applicant, the measure is considered approved. Advice on site can be found at consumer centers, self-help groups or patient advice centers, eg. B. the Independent Patient Counseling Germany. This has set up a nationwide free advice phone at 0800 0117722. www.unabhaengige-patientenberatung.de

This is how you recognize a good dentist

The doctor should have enough time for a thorough questioning, examination and consultation, presenting different alternatives with a cost and schedule, and giving the patient enough time to think about more extensive repairs.

Be careful if the doctor wants to impose private services on you.

For expensive work on the dentition, it is advisable to obtain a second opinion. Specialists (such as for root canal treatment or implantology) can be found with the help of the health insurance or the Federal Dental Association under www.bzaek.de . Under the rubric "Patients" and "Dentist search" you can search for doctors with specific activities in your area.
