The negative side of summer: wasps. This year, there will be many black and yellow insects. How to protect yourself from you and what helps against a wasp sting.

A scoop of ice cream after the next. And lying in a bikini in the sun - ohhh, we love the summer. If there were not these black and yellow beasts, which drive us regularly insane. What are we talking about? Of wasps, of course. And there should be many of them this year.

"There are more wasps than usual, " says Herbert Riebel, a hobby beekeeper and Hymenopteran expert from the southern Palatinate Ilbesheim. The conditions this summer - ideal. Warm and dry - that's what the wasps like best. By the end of July, some nests will be expanded: The workers create chambers for the larvae, there is plenty of building materials. Especially popular: dry wood. And the food is not lacking in the black and yellow insects. Lice and flies as far as the eye can see. But also cake and sausage are very popular. "They take what they can get, " says Berthold Langenhorst from the Nature Conservation Union (Nabu).

Wasps get really annoying only in August and in September. Then the workers are unemployed and go in search of carbohydrate-rich foods - preferably sweets, baked goods and ice cream.

Still, you do not have to be afraid of stings - as long as you do not have any insect poison allergy. Wasps have a defense strategy, not an attack strategy. In English, if you leave them alone, leave us alone. These tricks help to not even attract them:

  • Prefer white clothes. And best of all a white tablecloth. Wasps fly mainly on the colors yellow, blue and black.
  • Put the cake, cheese and sausage under a glass bell. Then the enticing scent does not spread. Also cover garbage cans nearby.
  • Do without perfume and creams. Their fragrances attract wasps magically. Incidentally, this also applies to wood polish! Ethereal oils of carnation, cedar, tea tree, and lemon have a deterrent effect.
  • Do not set traps. This attracts many wasps, but unfortunately only a few are caught.
