Paracetamol is the most popular painkiller of the Germans. With 50 million packs sold, it tops the list of pain-relieving medications. No wonder! Paracetamol is cheap, over the counter but also DANGEROUS. That's the result of a new study.
Just a few years ago sparked a debate over the over-the-counter painkillers. Paracetamol could lead to liver failure, stomach ulcers, heart disease and strokes, it said back then. Especially athletes who use the tablets to increase performance, are affected by the dangerous side effects.
The risk of ADHD increases
Now researchers in the 'European Journal of Pain' again warn of the danger of acetaminophen . Especially pregnant women are exposed to this danger. A large statistical survey from this year indicates that children whose mothers took paracetamol during pregnancy have a 37% higher risk of developing ADHD . The result is based on a study of 64, 322 Danish mothers.
A Norwegian study, which was already collected last year, underpins the above result. Thus, the children have a worse gross motor development and a disturbed communication behavior .
The alternative: ibuprofen
Kay Brune, pharmacologist at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, has been calling for prescriptions for paracetamol for years. He warns of the naturalness with which the drug is taken. A less dangerous alternative: ibuprofen.
